The “Victorinox” Human Smuggling Ring…

In a recent post I talked about the jailbreak of a female prisoner who managed to evade detection by German detention center security by hiding in anothers suitcase. I will admit to being surprised they got away with it. However it seems that they aren’t the only ones to resort to this method of human trafficking:

Now under normal circumstances I would be making smart aleck comments about how these folks obviously didn’t think the plan through. However, because the victorinox carry-on uber jailfrau duo managed to successfully avoid detection of the “carry on” party, I shall to refrain from any such comments. Or at least try to.

Except that the samsonite boys fared quite poorly in their attempt. And, honestly, who am I kidding. I can’t help myself. I have to ask at least these two questions:

What kind of person honestly expects to get away with hiding in the one travel article that, in my humble opinion, should be very first thing that any self respecting security professional would search? And more importantly, how funny might it be to see what these people looked like, all contorted into their respective luggage, as it proceeded slowly through a luggage x-ray machine…?

Only YOU can prevent Illegal Immigration…

Republican presidential candidate and former NY Mayor Rudy Giuliani made what i thought was a rather bold statement:

“We can end illegal immigration. I promise you, we can end illegal immigration,” the former New York mayor said at a community center — the first of the day’s two stops in this early voting state.

Giuliani said he would require a uniform identification card for foreign workers and students and create a central database to track the legal status of visitors to the country. He told the crowd of more than 300 that 12 million immigrants have entered the country illegally.

“That’s a lot of people to walk over your border without being identified,” he said. – [Yahoo/AP]

Ok so I have one question. Has he seen the size of our borders lately? It isn’t exactly a short stretch of barbed wire fencing. You know, anyone who has successfully been mayor of NY has to have something going for them. But his recent actions have cast a serious shadow on opinion of both his competency and honesty. If it were so easy to stop illegal immigration, it would have been done already.

Instead, it appears he will simply be one of those people who employ sweeping, indiscriminate, invasive and ultimately useless legislation that attack everything but the source of the problem, just like everyone else, especially the current administration.

I mean, the database idea is pointless because by definition, we don’t have any info on illegal immigrants. They don’t exactly register with the authorities after jumping the fence.
And as I pointed out earlier, America has a lot of border ground to cover, it’s not such an easy task to watch all of it. I don’t see where he has come forward with a good solution for anything…

The only way to stop illegal immigration is if we stop hiring illegal immigrants. Stop giving them jobs. Stop giving them benefits. Stop making it worth their while to cross the border. I don’t think that is going to happen. Nor do I necessarily think it should. They have become a significant part of our workforce. I think we need to figure out a way to integrate the ones that are here, and then provide some sort of incentive for new immigrants to do migrate legally. Because clearly, prohibition isn’t working…

And before you say “Grant them amnesty? Give them an incentive? Preposterous!” think about this. How much of your tax dollars is already currently going to giving illegal immigrants health care? Do you want them to be able to put their share of that cost back into the tax pool? Or do you want to just keep carrying their share of the economic burden for them?

Intelligent Illegal Immigration Reform…

New Haven, CT, has taken what I personally consider one of the smartest next steps in dealing with the illegal immigration problem. Bringing illegal immigrants out of hiding:

Dozens of people lined up at City Hall on Tuesday for municipal identification cards, the first city-issued ID cards specifically designed to bring illegal immigrants out of the shadows and give them access to community services. …

… “The simple straightforward purpose here is to build a stronger community,” Mayor John DeStefano said. “You can’t police a community of people who won’t talk to our cops.”

The mayor said the federal government had failed to address immigration-related issues, forcing cities to find ways to manage them. New Haven is simply acknowledging the people who already live there, he said.

“I think New Haven is doing something that makes sense for New Haven,” DeStefano said. “Service to one another in community, more than waving an American flag, defines the spirit of our soul.” – [Yahoo/AP]

I think this action on the part of Mayor DeStefano and the city of New Haven indicates a much better understanding of the true nature of the illegal immigrant problem, as opposed to the pseudo-patriotic exclusivist rhetoric I keep hearing people spew over and over. The true issue is how to build a strong community. In fact it is about how to build a strong America.

America was built, and has grown very strong I might add, on the principle of “Strength in diversity”. I think the city of New Haven has admirably demonstrated that they understand this concept. And the added benefit is that now, these folks will actually be able to actively participate in the strengthening that community, as opposed to being invisible, passive, and even detrimental elements of it.

How Many Americans Would Pass American Citizenry 101?

I read an interesting article this morning about how a majority of Canadians would fail the Citizenship test required for immigrants to become Canadian citizens:

The Ipsos-Reid survey showed that 60 percent of Canadians would fail the test. A similar poll done in 1997 showed a failure rate of 45 percent.

“Canadians appear to be losing knowledge when it comes to the most basic questions about Canadian history, politics, culture and geography … (they) performed abysmally on some questions,” the firm said in a statement. – [Reuters]

In the midst of all of the hullabaloo about illegal immigration, I can’t help but ask myself how many American citizens would pass the test required for American Citizenry. Many Americans are very quick to point fingers and cry foul at immigrants, both legal and illegal. We complain about them taking our jobs, benefits, cultural differences, language issues, and so on, ad nauseam. And yet there are many “American Citizens” whom I believe, have less of a right to the resources and opportunities that our great nation provides than a good number of the immigrants that they decry on a daily basis.

What we should really asking ourselves is, what makes someone a true American citizen? Being born in the good old U.S. of A.? I dunno. Most of us so called “Americans” are actually immigrants. Yeah, yeah, I know some of you are thinking, “OK, now he’s going to start babbling about Native Americans and so on. Why does he have to bring up old stuff?”. I know. It’s a clichéd and corny reference. But there is a point. I think everyone knows that although being born here automatically makes you an American citizen, it doesn’t automatically make you a good or even a worthy citizen. So I think it’s hypocritical for us to sit here and talk about making it harder for other people to become citizens, when we ourselves did exactly naught to do so.

I’m not saying that we should allow random immigrants to cross our borders and gain citizenship in a free and unrestricted manner, but considering the size and productivity of the immigrant workforce we currently employ, illegally I might add, (which says a lot about us), and somehow manage to give benefits to, we may as well let them become legal citizens, start paying taxes, bearing civic responsibility, and contributing to the pool they have been benefiting from. After all, they aren’t going to suddenly all vanish just because they are illegal now are they? As I see it, It’s either have them stay in hiding and deplete our resources from the inside, or let them into the fold and let the system work the way it’s supposed to. Just a crazy thought…

Terrorist Tactics On The Home Front…

Former NY mayor Rudy Giuliani, in response to the recent reports of terrorist acts in the UK, made an interesting statement connecting illegal immigration with terrorist activity, which I thought was rather dubious in nature:

“This is the United Kingdom”, he said. “They have security that is at least equal to ours; they have intelligence services that have even had more experience with terrorism than ours has, you know, they have to be subjected to this. We’re in an era in which we need to know everyone who’s in the United States.”

“We need to end illegal immigration,” he said. “If we do, a lot of things can happen, in terms of how you resolve everything here. But if you don’t end illegal immigration, almost nothing is possible, because no matter what you do, things are going to get worse.” – [Yahoo/AP]

Now given Mr. Giulianis great track record as mayor of NY, I found this a little disappointing. It almost seemed to me like he was attempting to use the terrorist acts in the UK as an opportunity to bolster his political position on illegal immigration ( and perhaps his candidacy for president). Now don’t get me wrong. I believe there needs to be a reform on illegal immigration, however the exact details on how to approach the problem are not as clear cut as everyone wants to believe. But I’m not sure that things like a “Universal ID” or a “tracking database” will actually do much more than give “big brother” more tools to in which to spy on citizens with.

I don’t believe there has ever been any link between illegal immigration and terrorism. All of the terrorists involved in 9/11 for instance, where here legally, on either student or tourist visas. In fact, any terrorist organization worth their salt would go to great lengths to stay under the radar and beyond reproach, including being here legally, having a normal job, normal life, even avoid speeding tickets, i.e. be a model citizen, until they are ready to strike. That’s just common sense. So to say that without ending illegal immigration, “nothing is possible” is pure conjecture, and simply a manipulation of peoples fears in order to achieve his goals.

Sadly, statements like these illustrate a common, subconscious misconception possessed by many Americans. That we have control over everything, and that with enough resources thrown at something, we can prevent anything. Sadly, this is far from the truth. Even if we could monitor every hushed bar room conversation, every phone call, every email, every IM, and know where every single individual was in the country at any given time, we still would not be able to guarantee that a terrorist act would not occur. None of us are omnipresent or omnipotent beings. I love this country. We are a great people, and I think that in many, many, ways, we are the greatest country in the world. But we are just people. No matter how hard we try, there are some things we will not be able to prevent or avoid.

Now I’m not saying we shouldn’t do everything in our power to prevent terrorist attacks from occurring. But I do believe that there is a point of diminishing returns on our efforts. A point where our actions will cross the line from over-protection to oppression. I do not wish to be a member of a bar coded society of sheep. I don’t want everything I say and do to be monitored 24/7/365, and have to worry that some little insignificant action or word will brand me a threat to national security. I’ve heard people say that things like this are necessary in the war on terror, and that we are fighting for our freedom, and that we have to make sacrifices in order to maintain our way of life. But if, in the process of protecting them, we give up our personal freedoms and our way of life, then what are we fighting for? The terrorists will have already won.
