The “Victorinox” Human Smuggling Ring…

In a recent post I talked about the jailbreak of a female prisoner who managed to evade detection by German detention center security by hiding in anothers suitcase. I will admit to being surprised they got away with it. However it seems that they aren’t the only ones to resort to this method of human trafficking:

Now under normal circumstances I would be making smart aleck comments about how these folks obviously didn’t think the plan through. However, because the victorinox carry-on uber jailfrau duo managed to successfully avoid detection of the “carry on” party, I shall to refrain from any such comments. Or at least try to.

Except that the samsonite boys fared quite poorly in their attempt. And, honestly, who am I kidding. I can’t help myself. I have to ask at least these two questions:

What kind of person honestly expects to get away with hiding in the one travel article that, in my humble opinion, should be very first thing that any self respecting security professional would search? And more importantly, how funny might it be to see what these people looked like, all contorted into their respective luggage, as it proceeded slowly through a luggage x-ray machine…?

It’s a Cook Book!

I came across an “unusual” story today:

Police burst into Jose Luis Calva’s Mexico City apartment last week and found fried human flesh on a dining table set with cutlery. They found more flesh in the refrigerator and an unfinished book by Calvo called “Cannibal Instincts.” – [Yahoo/Reuters]

Looks like he was getting ready to have a meal…

The mutilated body of Alejandra Galeana, 32, was in the bedroom closet.

Calva told prosecutors he killed Galeana after an argument, then cut an arm and a leg off of her body so that he could dispense of it in parts.

“He denies having tasted her flesh,” Mexico City’s chief homicide prosecutor Gustavo Salas told reporters. “According to him, he thought it was better to cook the meat so he could feed it to the dogs.” – [Yahoo/Reuters]

Never “tasted her flesh”? Is that like “I did not inhale.”? Or “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.”? (Sorry Bill…) In my experience, I find it much easier to write how-tos when I’m actually engaged in the process that the how-to is supposed to be describing. Which is what it looks like he’s doing. At least from where I’m standing.

Not to mention, I generally wouldn’t set the tables for my dogs. They usually eat from a bowl on the floor. Unless they are stealing my steak. Then they come to the table, and pull it to the floor. Where feasting would commence. No flatware involved. But what do I know. I generally never have to worry about how to dispose of my bodies…

I guess the one thing that puzzles me is why he’d admit to the murder, but get squeamish about admitting to having the poor woman for dinner. Some people need help…

Contrary Clergymen

You know, I am fully aware that priests are human beings, just like everyone else. But I’d hope that, once you became a man/woman of the cloth, you would at least try to leave behind the things that us regular folks are prone to do. But given some of the news I’ve been reading lately, I’m not sure there is any significance to being a priest anymore.

You have perverted priests, priests being annoying, bell ringing farts, priests engaging in petty feminism, and even priests who are, apparently, not above a little drinking, driving and brawling:

Priest Manuel Raul Ortega, who was not wearing clerical dress but was clutching a prayer book when captured, launched himself at the traffic cop who pulled him over earlier this week.

“The individual became very violent because they were going to tow away his car. He attacked a policeman and was taken away,” said transit department spokesman Hector Lozano on Thursday. – [Yahoo/Reuters]

Yes the Church welcomes everyone with open arms. I know. They are only human. Indeed. And they aren’t cops or government officials. But members of the clergy are often looked up to as the moral pillars of a community, and I’m beginning to think that, much like that Indian judge who was sentenced to take law school all over again, these clergymen/women might benefit from another stint in seminary school…

Forget OLPC! Wealthy mexican man does OSPV…

OK so OSPV is my made up acronym for “One School Per village.” But this article, I think, demonstrates the right way to help developing or impoverished nations learn to stand on thier own. And interestingly, it does not involve every child getting a laptop…

Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim, who is estimated by some calculations to be wealthier than Microsoft founder Bill Gates, said Thursday he did not care if he was the world’s richest person.

“It’s water off a duck’s back to me,” the cigar-smoking Slim told foreign correspondents. “I don’t know if I’m No. 1, No. 20, or No. 2,000. It doesn’t matter.”

Slim, 67, told foreign journalists at a luncheon on Thursday that making sure his job was compatible with his family or personal life was more important than his wealth.

Slim said Thursday his charitable foundations planned to invest $300 million in the next few years to build 100 schools in poor regions of Mexico that will focus on digital education. The plan would later be expanded throughout Latin America. – [Reuters]

Mr. Slim appears to be a man who is in touch with the people he is trying to help and has  a good understanding of what is truly needed. No gimmicks, no fancy schmancy technological baubles, nothing that is not self sustainable. Just straight-up education. That’s is what is really needed. A tip of the hat to you sir, a tip of the hat…

The 1200lb Man.

I am always amazed that anyone can actually get to this size:

A Mexican tipping the scales at 560 kilograms (1,234 pounds) will be listed as the world’s fattest man by the Guinness Book of Records, while a loss of 200 kilos (440 pounds) may make him the man who lost the most weight. – [Yahoo/AFP]

Now I realize that weight gain is a function of many things. Genetics, environment, mental state, eating and exercising habits, etc. But the fact remains that the body needs X amount of food, everyday, without buring a corresponding quantity of energy, in order to put on Y lbs of weight. Even with a serious genetic predisposition to fat deposition, you would still have to literally have to sit there, doing nothing, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, all the while eating continuously, in order to become this heavy.

Now I’m sure things like depression or mental illness could put one in the right mindset for this to occur. But I know I couldn’t do it. I don’t think I could eat that much. Or sit in one place for that long. I’d would almost certainly go stir crazy. But to do both for over 20 years straight? I don’t know. I honestly just don’t know.
